SANITARY INSPECTORS.
DUNEDIN CONFERENCE. The fourth annual conference of the New Zealand' Sanitary Inspectors' Association, held in Dunedin on January 23rd, 24th and 25th, was, according to Mr M. Kershaw, Chief Health Inspector, Christchureh, president of the Association, :in many respects the most successful yet held. About thirty delegates were welcomed in- the Town Hall iby the Mayor of Dunedin, Mr H. L. Tapley, and Mr C. E. Statham, Speaker of the House of Hepresentatives, both of whom expressed a wish that the conference would prove successful, and referred to the appreciation felt generally with regard to the work done by the sanitary inspectors in the interests of the health of the Dominion.
Reports were received from several centres indicating that during the year valuable assistance had been given to of the Association by medical men and others, who had contributed papers and given demonstrations of a highly informative character. It was reported that t'hs membership had risen to 138, embracing practically the whole of the inspectorial staffs of local bodies and the Health Department.
A large number of matters of interest were discussed, papers revsd, and demonstrations given by members of the conference and Professors Inglis, Drennan and Hercus, of the Otago University. Addresses and papers were also contributed by Dr. McKibbin, Medical Officer of Health for < Otago, Dr. J. S. Purdie, Metropolitan Officer of Health, Sydney, Mr W. D. It. McCurdie, City Engineer, Dunedin, and Mr F. J. Williams, civil engineer, Domedin.
Visits were ■paid to the aerated water and cordial factory of Messrs Thomson and Co., and to the kitchen of the Savoy dining rooms, Princes street, and a most instructive) time "was scent at the laboratory of the Otago University, where slides of magnified bacilli of various, infectious diseases were shown, together with specimens. On Friday afternoon members were taken for a motor ru:n to Mt. Cargill and to the Woodhaugh reservoir. In the evening Professor Hercns, with the help of some assistants, screened a film showing the preparation of calf lymph—the vaccine for smallpox and diphtheritic anti-toxin. Films depicting the life history of the mosquito and the fly were also shown. Mr M. Kershaw was re-elected president for the ensuing year. It was decided that the next conference should be held at Auckland.
