COUNTY COUNCILS.
WAIPARA. The monthly meeting of the Waipara County Council was held on Saturday. Present—Crs. N. D. Campbell (chairman), .a. X. Allan, H. ii. I'lnchain, 1). J. DoaJc, and A. Cameron .Leave o£ absence was granted to Cr. Anderson on account of illness. The clerk reported that the sum of £6300 in rates was still to be collected. A resolution was passed authorising an additional 10 per cent, to be charged after February 14th. The engineer reported that satisfactory progress was being made in all branches of work. The damage caused by the floods in May last was still being repaired. It ■ was resolved to send a letter of sympathy to Mr Anderson and best wishes lor his speedy recovery. The Public Works Department wrote stating that tenders were being advertised for the forming and shingling of the Pendle Hill deviation. The chairman reported that the settlers interested had agreed to pay for the fencing. ilr Gr. O. jfannett wrote asking if the Council would co-operate with him in arranging for a new ford over the Waikari river, as the present one was very dangerous. It w ; aa agTeed to meet Mr Pannett and arrange details. Mrs Kowney wrote offering a cottage as a worker's dwelling. It was resolved that the cottage wa3 not required. The \V;iim;uri County Council wrote stating that a conference would be held of those local bodies who contributed to the maintenance of the Empire bridge, with a view to arranging for a more equitable assessment. The matter of procuring up-to-date office accessories was left in the hjinds of tho chairman and the clerk. Mr G. Fulton wrote regarding the condition of the road to- the Scargill Hills homestead. The overseer war, instructed to arrange for immediate repairs. Mr Deans wrote asking for repairs to the Blythe road. It was resolved to give immediate attention to this work. Hawkers' licenses were granted to Messra W. Strange and Co., Bcath and Co., Drapery Importing Co., and R. J. Lewis. The clerk was instructed to notify all hawkers that licenses must be taken out by the end of the month. _ Tra-ction engine licenses were granted to Messrs Dalzell Bros., G. "W. Jackson, and D. McLachlan. An auctioneer's license was granted to Dalgety and Company, Ltd. The weekly hnlf-holiday was fixed for "Wednesday. " . Motor-lorry by-laws were passed faxing 1 fees up to £75 per annum. Monthly licenses to bo issued to lorries hpuliru? to tho railway. It wa3 resolved to include passenger 'buses in this by-law.
