DENTAL SCHOOLS.
COMMENT ON COMMISSION'S
REPORT. t
(pEESS ASSOCIATION TELEGSAiI.)
DTJNEDH January 25.
The Dental Commission's report was referred to the Hon. W. Downie Stewart, who said that the enquiry on which the report was based was purely a Departmental enquiry as to the best means of enlarging the dental school in Dunedin. There was no Cabinet authority for any enquiry as to whether any other place was more suitable for a dental school. "Whatever development may be found advisable in other centres in future," said Mr Stewart, "nothing will be done to prejudice the Dunedin Dental School without tlie concurrence of the Otago University, so long as I am a member of the Cabinet." Sir Henry Ferguson, Ttean of tlio Medical Faculty, said he had not seen the report and he had no knowledge of the evidence that had been placed before the committee, so he wa3 not in-a position to make a statement. However, he would faake the' general, comment that it would be a grave mistake to duplicate the departments of physiology and anatomy. These subjects couid bo taught quite sufficiently in Dunedin and it would be a very serious expense to establish schools elsewhere. When the report was referred to the Vice-Chancellor. Mr T. TK. Sidey, M.P., he stated that ho was not prepared to make any comment in the meantime. (special to "the pbess.") DUNEDIN, January 25. The Council of the University of Otago is not going to waste time in regard to the Dental School question, A special meeting of the Council is convened for Tuesday next. The Chamber of Commerce will also hold ai conference with M.P.'s and others.
