SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF

ANNUAL SPORTS. The annual sports of the School for ths Deaf were held this week. The day was pleasantly fine, and the programme drawn ui> was entered into most enthusiastically by i the children. The Bchool and house staff both worked hard to give the childiren. a happy time, and the results at the close of the day were sufficient evidence of the success of tho undertaking. Amongst many keen contests, that for Dr. Symes's prize proved both spectacular and popular. It is 'the annual competition in deportment and includes many forma of marching and posing, whilst balancing on tie head a vessel filled with water. After an excellent exhibition the winning junior girl was selected only when this competitors had ~ been halted and commanded to assume a prone position on the ground. Tho director, Mr J. M. B. Crawford, and Mrs Crawford welcomed a number of parents and friends, and Mrs Crawford at the conclusion of the disI tributed gilts to each of the scholars.
