The contention that wages are too low in view of the existing high rents was raised at. trie Arbitration Court today when an application was made by Mr A. Parlane (secretary to the Drivers' Vnion and a member of the executive of the New Zer.land Alliance of Labour) on behalf of tne Alliance of Labour, that the Court should fix a day to hear argument in favour _ of a substantial increase in the basic rate of wages before the expiration of tne 1921-22 legislation, which provided tor periodica} general adjustments of wages. The reason for the application, saui sfi- Parlane, was that the present basic rate was not sufficient to provide for the bar© necessaries of physical existence. After a lengthy speech by Mr Parlane, Mr Justice Eraser said_ that the points raised would oe carefully considered.
