Westland'a anniversary day was observed yesterday. Flags wre flying from the public bnildinga in honour of the occasion. Tho banks, public offices and legal offices were closed, bat otherwise there was little commemoration. Obituary. The death oil an old pioneer, Mr Samuel Hill, took place at the Beefton Hospital, of which institution he had been an inmate for some months. He waa a Londoner by birth, and followed all the gold rushes in Australia anu New Zealand before settling at Beeiton. The death occurred last night, after a long illness, of Mr "William Anderson, a member of the Borough Council staff and a well-known resident. Ho was ;i prominent member of the Fire Brigade and the Old Boysi' Association. Ho jeaves a widow and children. Personal. Mr A. P. Kellehc-r, inspector of totalizators, left for Wellington yesterday after a brief visit to the West Coast. Dr. Simpson, of Murchlson, has been seriously ill since Sunclay, and has been taken to the Nelson Hospital.
