CRICKET.
LINWOOD CLUB
The annual report of the Linwood Cricket .Club states that tho financial aspect of the club is very satisfactory, and as soon as the outstanding subscriptions have been collected tho club will be in a position to meet ail present liabilities, and commence the coming season with a clean sheet. The club's teams had a very good season in their respective grades. The first' eleven,, under the leadership of F. Smith, annexed the first grado cup, and a!l the members of the club congratulate them on their success and keenness on and off the field. The second grade, captained by E. E. Weston, were a very strong combination for their grade, and were perhaps a trifle unlucky in not being awarded tho trophy in their competition, only being beaten in one match, until a. new innovation to club crioketJ-a "knockout" competition—was introduced, which, however, proved such a farce that the Canterbury Cricket Association decided to abandon the competition. Tho third grade A team,' under the captaincy of the late F. G. Weston, had a good run until near the sfinish of the season, and on account of being forced to play short in the later matches, had to be content to be out of tho limelight for a Beason. The B team wa* a team of youngsters and, despite, eeveral losses, was in a good position at the finish. Success should come to this team Bhortly, which they deserve as. a reward to a team of battlers. Tho fourth grade team, which waa composed of a team of schoolboys, was at long way down tho list, but should show improved form if tho seniors would take more interest in these boys, "the seniors of the future," and it is within the bounds of possibility that this team should annex tho competition in the coming season. The club was represented in the big matches by K. Read, P. Smith, and M. Boon, and in the junior representatives by €. L. King (captain), B. J. Spaan, and F. Pengelly. Attention is drawn to the lack of interest generally displayed by members to the affairs of the club, especially to the non-attendance of members at practice after the first few weeks. Congratulations are extended to F Smith on obtaining the first century nnd thus mnning.Mr Hutchison's trophy' ZUlerenc* is made to the loss sustained by tho club in the death of the late Mr F G Weston, and sympathy in extended to his relatives. •"
