SPORTING.

Aamirers of good horses wiii appreciate Mr J. 13. Henrys's New Zealand Cup handicaps, for, in commencing his weights with V stone, he lias not saeri:;eed the proved gallopers in order to benefit the nondescripts at the tail. Bonnie Vv'inlde was generally selected as the candidate to be honoured with top-weight, but few will quarrel with the handieapper in assessing Seion as the best of the field, for his record last year of winning both the New Zealand and Auckland Cups was no mean performance; The proved performers in the 8 stone division are well in their places, but there seems fewer in the middle of the handicap this year, only thirteen being weighted between 7 stone and 8 stone. This is conceded always a dangerous part of the handicap, and a glance through the names this year reveals a number of horßes who at this distance appear decided possibilities. As usual, there is a long tail, 27 receiving less than 7 stone, or nearly half the original entry. First acceptances are due next Friday at 8 p.m. Tho Ashburton County Kaeing Club is the first of the Canterbury country clubs to race this'season. Nominations for the spring fixture on September 21st and 22nd close with the secretary, Mr A. A. Tooks, on Wednesday next, at 5 p.m. It is understood that Enthusiasm will be given a run in the open six furlong handicap on the opening day of the Wanganui Meeting, and should be smartened' up thereby for tho Eclipse Stakes decided on tho concluding day. Present appearances would suggest that Trentham stables will hold their own this season, for they shelter a very promising number of young and wellbred horses, a fair percentage 'of whom were bred in England. .Mr Vivian Biddiford 's imported . .fillies in S. Eeid 's charge are all doing well, and are much in favour with the trackwatchers. Mr Eric Eiddiford's three-year-olds, Glarre and Dubious, galloped with Scion on Tuesday morning, and naturally the youngsters beat the dual Cup winner home. Dubious did best, and finished up his half-mile in 52 l-ss. Tool's Paradise- (Absurd: —Mascot)," and the imported ' Eoyal Divorce were , sprinted three .furlongs in company. The former haa all the Absurd brilliancy, but tho English horses finished best. Muraahi, who raced well, but unluckily, at the last Now Zealand Cup Meeting, was a starter in the open sprint event at the Egmont-Wanganui Hunt Meeting. He looked a good deal above himself, was ridden' by an apprentice, and made no showing. The secretary of the Manawatu Racing Club has compiled a most interesting table showing the taxation paid by his club from tho 1914-15 racing year to tho one just closed. The total for the nine seasons amounted to the huge sum of £91,450 4s 4d, made up aa follows:—Totalisator 1 , tax, £41,657 13s 6dj dividend tax, £43,297 lis 6a? stakes tax, £3588 9,5; receipts tax, £ll3B 18s lid; and amusement tax, £1767 lis sd.

It is questionable whether there has ever been a time in which wo have had a greater number of first-rate boy jockeys than the present, states the "Sporting Life." Jn the nineties, Bradford, when an apprentice, could bold his own with his coders', while in later years Johnny Beift' and Prank ■Wobtton achieved remarkable success as boys. But whereas the riders named stood out by themsßlves in their particular periods, we now have quite a number of lads right lat the top of the tree. One of these, Elliott, maintains his position near ihe_ head of the winning jockeys' list, while R. A. Jones has also established his reputation. Smirke has done likewise to a lesser degree, while other youngsters who are well in the limelight include Perryman and Ingham. The-pair last named were concerned in a' dead-heat at LingfielS, while the former later won outright on the uncertain Houdale. It is eminently satisfactory to find the younger generation of; jockeys thus asserting (themselves. Two seasons \ ago in England Gold«n Snn -was represented by the premier two-year-old of the uyear in Golden Corn, but unfortunately the latter did not, as a three-year-old, race up to her earlier brilliant' form. This year Golden Sun, has another' very speedy youngster racing for him, in Golden Bud, a bay colt .from Boaendaal. Up to the first week in-July' Golden Bud had. won each of his three races, and is described as a nea,t, if small, colt, and brimful of courage. ' He was purefiased as a yearling for 300 guineas. When a brood mare gets over the twenty mark she rarely produces anything of much account, but Concertina, who recently won the North Derby in England for Lord Astor, atnd was ridden by Frank Bullock, is out of a mare who was foaled as long ago as 1895. Reports in English eschanges suggest that it is unlikely that Captain Cuttle will race again. An attempt was made to train him for the Eclipse Stakes at Sandown Park, but had to be abandoned. It has been definitely decided that tho "Captain" will go to the stud next, season, and will stand at his owner's Sussex estate, Lavington Park.

Babelais, although in Lis twentythird year, continues to sine a number of good winners in France. His two-year-olds have done remarkably well. Katerfelto, one of his sons, has won two races, including the Grand Cri-

terion at Ostend, and is so far the best youngster seen out. Rabelais is ;i worthy son of St. Simon, who in 3901, though over 21 years of age, was head of the list of winning sires in England. A Sydney message says that after galloping a mile at Itandwick, Speciality dropped dead.
