—« — Mr F. E. Sewall (Dunedin) is staying at the Clarendon Hotel. A motion of sympathy with Dr. O. Chilton in his illness was passed at a meeting of the Canterbury College Scientific .Society last evening. Messrs J. H. Edmundson (Napier), W. Morton (Wellington), and W. Weir (Invercargill) are staying at the United Service Hotel. Mr W. M. Te Awarau, of College House, who went south with the Maori footballers for their match against South Canterbury, returned' to Christchurch yesterday. In the House of Representatives yesterday Mr Massey said that ho had much pleasure in announcing that Sir James Allen had been reappointed High Commissioner for New Zealand in London for another twelve months. On Wednesday last the employees of the Christchurch Gas Company, Worcester street, met Mr W. T. Oliver, who has just' recovered from a severe illness, and is going to the.. Islands for a holiday, and presented him with a gentleman's companion. Messrs L. W. Gilbert (Wellington), H. A. Wheatley (Wellington), H. L. Holthouse (Wellington), W. Jeffrey (Wellington), P. Bruzzo (Wellington), C. H. Palmer (Auckland), C. Irons (Wellington), and F. W. Butcher (Auckland) are amongst the recent arrivals at Warner's Hotel. Captain Gordon, who retired some months ago from the position of piermaster for the Otago Harbour Board, was entertained yesterday by representatives of the shipping rompames. Customs officials, and others. The Mayor (Mr Tapley) presided and presented Captain Gordon with two books of special interest; also a tobacco pouch containing 100 guineas. A lady who was not .present at the function sent a, case of pipes for the captain.
