THE PRESBYTERY.
MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Christchurch Presbytery was held yesterday, the Rev. J. j. Bates (Moderator) presiding. The elders' commission which visited Kainpoi recommended that Mr R. J. Logan should he tlic Presbytery's representative. Mr Lojiaii's commission was sustained and the elders' commission was discharged. After vending correspondence regarding the Duns>andol nulnse. the clerk, the Rev. W. H. Howes, said he would suggest that the resolution adopted previously by the Presbytery be allowed to stand, and an understanding b» given that nothing should be done in regard to the sale of the Dunsandel manse at present. Further, that when the manse was sold, Brookside should be given its share of the proceeds. The clerk's suggestion was adopted, and the matter was left in the hands of the Leeston commission. The Rev. J. V. Jacobson made a statement in regard to the Presbyterian bursary sclieme. He said the matter should not be turned down because it meant another appeal. The present system of sending students into the country to preach was wrong. Students could not afford the time spent in travelling- during the week-end. They would be better employed if they remained in the city and heard the sermons of more experienced ministers. They could obtain preaching experience during the long vacation. It was suggested, he said, that each Presbytery should give l a bursary to assist students in finding the necessaries of life. At present they had SO or 60 students taking the arts or theological course. At present they were sending £6OOO to China for the training of students. This would provide interest of about £3l'o a year, which could be divided amongst students as a bursary. The bursary .appeal was not so romantic, perhaps, as an appeal for abroad, but there was a great need for assistance. He moved that the Presbytery provide a. bursary of £2O, to be known as the Christchurch Presbytery Bursary; that an appeal bo made to ministers and laymen for funds; that students taking either the arts or theological course should be eligible to hold the bursary, and that such students should be representative of the Christchurch Presbytery ; that in the event of there being no stjndents retprfesentaitive of Christchurch, the allocation of the bursary should be left in the hands of the Theological Committee. The motion was seconded by the Rev. J. B. Bickerstaff. The Rev. W. H. Howes moved as an amendment that the report and recommendations bo held over until next meeting. The amendment was seconded and carried. The secretary of the Foreign Missions Society forwarded the Budget for 1923, which wnsr, read and referred to the Finanoe Committee. The clerk of the Timaru Presbytery wrote inviting representatives of the Christchurch Presbytery to attend the Timaru jubilee services on September 25 th. The Rev. Dr. Envin, the Rev. J. Dickson, and the Moderator were appointed to convey greetings to the Timaru Presbytery. The annual report of the Presbyterian Sunday School Union was received. The Rev. X. L. 3>. "Webster reported that there would be no difficulty in arranging services at Islington. In regard to the Chaplaincy Committee, he reported that the first year's working of the hospitals chaplaincy had been a great sueebss. The Presbytery had been very fortunate in obtaining such a suitable man as the Rev. J. Lvmburn for the position of chaplain. His services to the patients of the various institutions had been highly praised in every direction. *' Mr Lymbum gave an. account of his labours amongst the patients during the last twelve months. A resolution was adopted expressing appreciation of Mr Lvmbum's work and commending it to the congregations. The Rev. AV. H. Howes reported that the Papanni congregation wished to borrow £IOOO on a new brick church, to cost from £I4OO to> £I6OO. The Presbytery endorsed the application for the loan, and recommended it to the Church Property Trustees. The plans of the new church were approved.
