COUNTY COUNCILS.
SELWYN. The Selwvn County Council met on Monday. Present: Org. F. J. Andrew (chairman), W. Gilmour, T. E. Pearson, CI. Hall, W. Stone, B. M. Izard, G. Eight, R. H. John3ion, and J- Blown. The chairman referred to the loss the Clerk and his family had sustained by tho death of Mrs Wright, and moved a vote of condolence -and sympathy with them in their ■bereavement, which was carried in silenco. Tii d Engineer reported, that the estimated cost "of enlarging the culvert on St Helens -oad was £l7, but suggested that tho difficulty of flood water might be overcome by straightening and cleaning the outfall, liie matti.r was referred to the Engineer to make enquiries. . . Mr W. Hall wrote offering to contribute Laif cost of a light trnffic_ bridge over the llororata river at Sleemans road. It was decided to accept thc_ offer and that tho bridsc be a county bridge. It' was decided to renew a wooden bridge over the creek on Derrett road in the spring, rnd to purchase a small grader for use in tho Iralto Coleridge Riding. Mr C.r. Kali was granted permission to straighten the course of tho Hororata river at St-eele's road. The Engineer-in-Chief of the Public Works Department wrote forwarding a schedule showing the grouping of counties in terms of Se.-'tion S of tho Main Highways Act, 1922. It was decided to approve of the Schedule. Tho Jvcw Zealand Counties' Association gave notice that the annual conference will lie held in Wellington on Auo-ust Bth, and asked that ono delegate be appointed to attend. Cr. G. Hnll was appointed. Mr H. F. Wright wrote asking that the footbridge on tho Selwyn road be lengthened so as to provide more water-way. The matter was referred to the Engineer for a report. I The Director-General of Agriculture wrote ! stating that- the Minister of Agriculture had been requested by the Hawko's Bay County Council to have rooks added to the list of injurious birds under the Injurious Birds' Act, 1908, and to extend the operation of Part I. of the Act to the Hawke's Bay County. It was decided to offer no objection. A petition was received from residents and ratepayers of Terrace road, asking that the shingling of that road be continued to Steele's rond. Tho Engineer was asked to report on the matter at next meeting. Mr A. W Ironside wrote asking for thai part of Morgan's rond recently formed to bo shingled. It wsn decided to 6pend £SO on , the work when tho Council's teams are avail' able. The Engineer was instruoted to interview tho Engineer of the Public Works Electrical Department regarding the damage being done | to light traffic ronds by the hauling of heavy I machinery by traction engines to Dunsandef. j It was decided that if property owners, who j had been served with notice to clear their ' load frontages of gorw, did not make gooi

A general rate of one halfpenny in the pound was levied in the Rakaia and Hororata Ridings, and fivc-eighthe of a penny in the pound in the Lake Coleridge Riding.
