Under the system whereby half the members of she Senate retire evtiry three years, eighteen senators retired yesterday and their successors chofien at the last general election, took their places. Eleven of the new members are members of the Labour Party, bringing the Labour representation, which was previously only one, up to twelve. In the Senate the Hon. T. Givens beat the Hon. E. D. Millen by 11 votes to 10 for the party selection. He was subsequently re-elected president by 21 votes to 12, Labour voting for the Hon. S. Barker. Had Messrs Givens and Millen both submitted their names to the Senate, it is understood that the Labour twelve would have voted for Mr Millen.
