PUBLIC SERVICE RETIREMENT.
EFFECT ON PENSION FUNDS. In the courße of an interview with an Auckland "star" representative tms week jVir 'JR.. i>. Morns, tne retiring secretary of" the Post©and Te.egrapn Department, gave some interesting information concerning tne service. Referring to the question of the retirement of officers of the Post and ie»egraph Department after. 40 years' service, Mr Morris said that this provision had been instituted when they were in the throes of very drastic retrenchment. It was a measure that the Postmaster-General instituted, and resulted in a great number leaving the & rvice, he himself being one of the .e.w officers to remain. The condition .iad not been rigidly carried out, nor iva'3 it the desire of the present Admiri-i-tration to encourage officers to resign. There were many men in the service who had entered it at an earlv age, and after 40 years were really in their, prime. It was onlv right that the services of such should be retained. A man with that length of service was entitled to full retiring allowance, but should he care to remain and advance in the service, it would naturally give him an enhanced retiring allowance. ' "If a large number were to leave the servce, what effect would it have on thp superannuation fund?" "It would naturallv De a great danger to that fund, and certainly is not economy," replied the secretary. r "The superannuation fund has to be subsidised b.v the Government, and the retirement of these officers would be a very big call'on the fund. It is not, however, arbitrarv. and most of the officers are likely to remain."
