SUMNER ITEMS.

Eoll of Honour. Two wings were added to the Eoll of Honour of the Bury street School this week, and the Memorial is now considered complete. The names of the men are as follows:—Eight wing: 11. E. C. li'oliitt (killed in action), A. Whittington. - Thanks are due to Mrs Isaac \\ ilson, who gave the main portion of the lloil of Honour; to Mrs J. Barr and Mr E. G. who contributed the side wings, and to MiGee, who did the gilding free of charge.

Borough Election. Great interest was evident throughriut the borough on Thursday, the. occasion being the borough ' election. Every motor-car available was used i\i bringing the residents to the polling booth, which was a scene of great activity during the day, and continued so to the time of closing. A large crowd waited outside the Council Chambers to hear (he results of the mayoral contest, and at about 10 p.m. the retiring Mayor, the Hon. J. Burr, M.L.C., stepped on to the balcony, with Mr W. 11. Nicholson, the new Mayor. In introducing Mr Nicholson, Mr Barr said that, although he was not well-known, he was sure that he soon would be, and wouid prove that he wa3 fully capable of the position he was to hold. (Cheers.) Mr Nicholson, who was greeted with applause, said that he wished to express his deep appreciation of the honour done him by the residents of Sumner and Ecdcliil'a in electing him first citizen of the borough. In sp:te of n.s best efforts, he could not hope to outclass those of his predecessor, and lie felt both proud and humble at the thought of being chosen to take his place. Mr Nicholson said he regretted that Mr Whitfield would not be on the Council with him. Although Mr Whitfield had not been returned as Mayor, he would give him credit for oiiering his services in the best spirit, and lie would call for three cheers for Mr Whitfield, to show him the esteem in which he was held. Mr Nicholson closed by assuring them that he would always have the interests of the borough at heart, and he hoped that they would greet him as well at the end of his term of office, as well as they were greeting the retiring Mayor, than whom there was not a whiter man in Sumner. (Applause.) Three cheers were given for the new Mayor, after which Mr Whitfield spoke briefly, thanking those who had supported him,- and commenting on the sportsmanlike way in which the election had been run. Ladies' Kifle Club. The first shoot of the ladies' rifle shooting season was held on Thursday evening, when there was a large attendance of members, including a number of new shootists. The new rifles proved very satisfactory, and a uumber of good scores resulted. Mrs F. Truscott won a prize for highest score of the evening. Senior Cadets. The local Cadets paraded on Anzac Day, and attended the service at the Anglican Church.. There was a good muster. On arrival at the church, a wreath was presented, to be hung over the 801 l of Honour. The inter-Borough Kifle Match will be fired in a few weeks' time, and will take place in Sumner. The local team is a good one, and should give a good account of itself. Sumner Rugby Football Club. The following team will represent Sumner in the 3rd grade A competition against Kaiapoi, at Kaiapoi (No. 1), to-day:—Full-back, Taylor; three-quar-ters, Craddock, Bagley, Prebble; fiveeighths, Cree, Hampton; half, Dickson; forwards, Middleton, Finlayson, Wil-

son, McCarthy, Lindroos, Summerton, Johnson; wing, Mitchell. Emergencies: Forwards, Petersen; backs, Bowman, G. Malloch. Ladies' Guild. The members of the Sumner Ladies' Guild of the Seamen's Institute visited Lyttelton Thursday evening, and guve an entertainment at the Institute. An excellent programme was submitted, the following contributing hems: Miss Miller, Mr Black, pianoforte solos; Mr and Mrs Lee, .duet; Miss OKiriilge, recitation; Miss Pearce. song: Mrs West, pianoforte solo; Miss Hobson and Miss Grant, solos. After the conclusion of the programme supper was provided by the ladies of the Guild, and the evening closed with the National Anthem. The president, Mrs Smithson, thanked Messrs W. G. Black and J. Lee, who conveyed the party to Port iu their cars.
