WORKERS' EDUCATIONAL ASSOCIATION.

DISTRICT COUNCIL MEETING. The Christchurch District Council of the Workers' Educational Association met on Thursday night, Mr H. D. Acland, president, in the chair. There was a good muster of delegates. In welcoming the new delegates, the chairman expressed the hope that they would co-operate with the old mem-, hers in making the W.E.A. movement successful. The secretary (Mr G. Manning) reported that the session had opened with 23 classes authorised; in addition, new classes would be established at Fairlie and Waimate. Mr H. Belcher, M.A., would take the sociology class in Timaru. The classes, tutors, and attendance were as follows: —

The. currency and credit class at Rangiora had not held its first meeting when the report was prepared. When this and other classes were formed, the total attndances would be, approximately, 756. The list of public lectures had been drawn up, and the first would be given on May 12th. Reference was made to the visits of students to the Lake Coleridge powerhouse, Deans's Bush, and Cashmere Hills. A campaign had been started for honorary members at an annual subscription of one guinea, and already a number of citizens had indicated that they intended becoming honorary members. The secretary also reported on the Dominion Conference of the W.E.A., and stated that he was in communication with the members of the deputation appointed to wait on the Government, with the view of obtaining an increased grant. The secretary's report was adopted. A report was also submitted by Mr Manning on the Summer School at Leitlifield, which was attended by 149 persons, 114 being students. There was a balance to credit of £29 8s 4d on the school. Acknowledgement was made of the assistance given by Mr H. May, of Leithfield, and it was decided to present him with a complete set of photographs of the school as a memento from the students.' The report was adopted. It was decided to defer, to a meeting to be held in a fortnight's time, discussion of several matters arising out of the report of the Dominion Conference, including the questions of a central library and the publication of a periodical dealing with W.E.A. matters. It was decided to support the holding of an annual convention in connexion with the annual conference. It was decided to set up a Social Committee to take charge of the social activities of the moveinet. It is hoped to expand these activities during the present session. The question of direct representation of Timaru on the Tutoral Class Committee was discussed, but decision was left over till the next meeting of the District Council.
