STRUCK BY A TRAIN.
ACCIDENT AT RAILWAY CROSSING. As a special inspecting train, which had on board Mr R. W. McVilly. general manager of tho railways, and othe» railway officials, was'approaching tho Antigua street level crossing shortly after 9 a.m. yesterday,- an old man, feeble and apparently deaf, was observed to bo walking towards tho crossing. Tiie crossing-keeper and tho signal man on duty did their best to prevent him from aoine on the line, but disregarding their warnings,, ho went on, and was struck by tha engine Unci fell between the tramway lines on the South side of tho railway track. Tho train was at once stopped and after the injured man had been given attention he was taken to_ tho hospital in an un- j conscious condition.
It was found that he had sustained a compound fracture- of one of his legs and injuries to his head. ll© was operated on and his right arm amputated, and up to a lata hour last night had not regained consciousnes. He was identified last night-as Thomas William Paul, aged 70, who had lived by himself for some years at 113 Sydney street,, Sydenham. It is stated that the signalman at the crossing actually caught hold of tho old man's shoulder ,in his endeavour to avert a casualty, 'but liis action was too late.
