DRAINAGE BOARD.
MONTHLY MEETING. The Christchurch Drainage Board met last night. Present: Messrs Walter J. Hill (chairman), H. J. Otley, 8. A. Staples, W. J. Walter, H. Holland, A. T. Smith, C. Hill, S. C. Bingham, P. Burgoyne, 0. W. B. Anderson, and H. G. Livingstone. Johnson's Drain. Kegarding an application from Mr Wm. Dick to havo Johnson's Drain piped through his property, 454 Durham street north, the Works Committee reported that they had inspected the drain, and recommended that it be piped for its entire length, about 44 chains, provided the owners of the properties through which it runs, would defray half the cost, which was estimated at €7o. In the event of the property-owners on the upper end of the drain refusing to agree to the conditions, the committee recommended that the lower end be piped on the same terms, provided the portion piped was a continuous length. The recommendation was approved. Northcote Settlement Drainage. The committee reported that the engineer had been instructed to give further notice to the Public Works Department to prevent any sewage from the septic, tank finding its way into Kruse's Drain, and also to clear tho drain of all obstructions caused by tho slipping in of the banks. Mr 11. J. Otley: What has been done here"? The engineer: Nothing except clearing the blockage. Mr Otley: That has not been properly done. We should write to the Public Works Department again on the matter. The report of the committeo was adopted. Eiccarton Drain. Regarding the application of the Eiccarton Borough Council to extend the culvert in Dilworth street, and to place a sum on the estimates for same, the engineer reported that, as stated by the Council, the culvert at present was some inconvenience to traffic, and from a road improvement point of view it was desirable that it be extended to the full width of the road. Such extension would involve the construction of one chain of Gin culvert at an estimated cost of £2lO. Tho matter was held over until it was ascertained what part of tho cost the Eiccarton Council would pay. Burwood Drain. Tho engineer reported that the timber decking on Barker's Drain culvert at Eiver road, Burwood, had collapsed, and it was found that the whole of the deck required renewing. The cost of the new timber was about £45. Tho secretary said the work had been completed. Sewage Farm. In the matter of levelling off new paddocks at the sewage farm, the engineer stated that the tractors for the work had come to hand. Messrs Booth, Macdonald and Company were making three scoops, and also altering the "Eoytrac" scoops which were used at the trial. In the meantime a, start been made with scrub-cutting and tho erection of temporary fences. The Board resolved to insure the men and the plant against accident. Pumping Operations. The pumping engineer reported that during March 717,425 tons were pumped to the farm; As compared with the quantity pumped during March, 1922, that showed an increase of 19,756 ..tons. Tho rainfall for the month was .40in, compared with 2.8G inches for the corresponding period last year. The average depth in the suction tank was lift 3in.\ Avon Improvement. The clerk to the Heathcote County Council advised that his Council had approved of tho proposal to confer special powers on the Drainage Board for improving the Avon and Heathcote Elvers. Tramway Board Application. The General Manager of tho Christchurch Tramway Board applied for the .Board's consent to cover over a portion of a drain adjoining a proposed tramway track to be laid down on tho property known as "Harrison street," near St. Albans Park* the freehold ofwhich had been acquired by the Board in order fitat. standing trailers might bo removed from the public street at St. Albans Park. Permission was granted subject to tho work being carried out to the satisfaction of the engineer.
