Speaking to a motion at the conference of the Commercial Travellers' Association in favour of improved telephone facilities, speakers declared that the New South Wales service was the worst in the world. One said that he was living a few miles from Sydney, and he could get quicker communication by visiting the city than by using the telephone. He estimated that six months' calls cost him the high rate of <3£d each.

SYDNEY, April 2. Sir Mark Sheldon lias returned from a world tour. Eulogising the work of the League of Nations he emphasised the necessity of Australia having direct representation. South Africa and New Zealand hadl been represented bv delegates from Great Britain, but the result had not been satisfactory. . He added that it was too early to iudge the effects of prohibition on the people of America. It would be wise to wait five'' years or nibre. The authorities were trying hard to stop boot-legging.
