EVASION OF EXCISE DUTY.

Slnee the war Germany has been fertilw4B novel frauds. All cigarettes ara subject to an ezeiße duty of 40 per eent., and a luxury tax of 6 per cent, more. The fact that the tax has been paid is certified by a band gummed on the boxes. Forgers have found a highly profitable .source of income' in counterfeiting this band. About 500,000,000 cigarettes, being 25 per cent, of the total, have been escaping duty annually owing to forged excise bands, representing a loss to the Exchequer of £2,000,000.
