THE VOTING IN CANTERBURY.
THE LIBERAL PARTTS SLUMP. A notable feature of the election figures is the deoline in the strength of the Liberal vote in this province. There are thirteen seats, including Waitaki. In the following calculations we have omitted all account of Christchurch North, where Reformers and Liberals jointly supported Mr Isitt in 1919 and this year. The voting in the other twelve seats in 1919 and 1922 were as follows: 1919 1922 Gain or loss Reform 23,520 37,694 14,074 gain Liberal 33,590 25,760 7840 loss The gain by Reform is more proportionately than the increase in the number of voters. The loss by the Liberal Party, is absolute, despite the fact that the number or electors increased. Equally interesting is the position of the Liberal Party in comparison with Labour. The votes polled by Labour candidates were: In 1919, ... 29,192 In 1922, ... 32,842 On Thursday the Labour candidates eeoured 32,842 votes, as against the Liberal Party's 26,750. The above figures are, of course, not based on final returns, but the final figures can only affect the totals by a few score or a few hundreds, and such figures are negligible in the general totals.
