Driving tinr wasp-like Curtiss aeroplanes equipped with 370-h.p. engines, Lieut R. L. Maughan and Lieut. Ij. J Maitland established new speed records at Mount Clemens, Michigan, U.S.A. Lieut. Maughan completed a 150 miles course at an .average speed of 206 miles an hour, thus eclipsing the performance of M. George Kirsch in France last mouth of 179 miles an hour, Lieut. Maitland's average speed for the whole course v/as 203 miles an hour, but he completed the first lap of 31 miles at 216 miles an hour. Both men reported on coming down tbat they had lost consciousness owing to. the terrific centrifugal force when they rounded the pylons marking the course. "In the fourth lap," said Lieut.
