SOUTH CANTERBURY.

-■■♦ TEMUKA. The New Zealand University matricuation examinations are now being held at the Technical Schoolroom. There are hirteen local candidates. The supervisor is the Bev. A. H. Norris, and the assistant-supervisor Miss L. M. Phillips. An exceedingly well organised and enjoyable social gathering of parishioners was held at the Maori Pa Hall on Wednesday evening, during the course of which the election results in the Southern electorate were announced. A large number of members of St. Peter's Club and lady friends were present, and the Teniuka orchestra, which was in splendid form, gave very valuable assistance in the dancing and community iinging. The items given by the Maoris, poi dance by the little girls, choruses by the young ladies, and the haka by fearsome little boys, were received with vociferous applause. Songs and recitations were given by Mrs Palmer, Mrs Foxon, Miss E. Manning, and Mr B. Hughes, and were encored. Mr W. J. Keys controlled the gain n & and the dancing, and Misses Grey and Robinson and Mr W. Taylor were the pianists. The vicar, who presided, congratulated the Maori ladies very iieartily on the excellence of all their ;rrangements for the evening, and on •i:o first-class supper which they pro•ided; he also expressed the opinion chat it would be well for more of the pakeha people to take part in social ratherings with the Arowhenua Maoris.
