BOROUGH COUNCILS

AKAROA. The Akaroa Borough Council met on "Wednesday. Present—The Mayor (Mr F. E. Davis), and Crs. H. W Wilkins, Z. Stewart, C. W. Leete, W. C. Pool, T. Wilson, A. J. Faithfull, Digby J. Smith, and H. J. Barnham. The Council went into committee to discuss the position between it and the Peninsula Power Board concerning the possession of the borough e.ectric plant. Upon resuming it was reported "'That the Council does i.ot intend to appeal against' the decision .t Judge, iidaais in the recent Supreme Court use, Power Board v. Two petitions, each from a number of local business people, dealing with the fixing cf the weekly half-holiday, were referred back to the petitioners as not being fully in accordance with the Act . ■ Messrs Meares, Williams, and Holmes wrote in reference to loans from State Advances Office, enclosing debentures lor signature, and stating that the money would be forthcoming on return of -same. The Canterbury Progress League wrote, informing the Council of results, eo far, of its eiKniiriea into the working of the railways in the province. The Council approved of the new schedule of-duties of the town c'.erk, applications for which position are being called, the resolution of the present r.fficial, Air G. W. Thomas, on account of ill-health, taking effect from January 31st. ' It was decided to proclaim Saturday, December 16th, a whole holiday, on the occasion of the Akaroa regatta. The finance report showed:— Receipts £79 53 Cd, B.P. War Memorial Society's loan, dr. £3OO, B.P. Patriotic Society's loan, dr £SOO, antecedent liability £1199 14s 4d, district fund account, cr. £IOO 2s 2d, borough loan improvement account, cr. £420 17a 10d, accounts for payment £146 la 7d. Cr. licete brought up the matter of a road roller. He Btatedl that the Akaroa County Council and the Eoad Board were considering the advisability of combining to purchase one. He thought it wpuld be a distinct advantage for the Borough to cooperate with thos> bodies. The Council approved of the suggestion, no action, however, to be taken at present. It was decided to replace the old fence along the Esplanade with wooden posts and pipe rails. In connnexion with the position of town clerk it was resolved to close applications on December 20th, the successful candidate to take up his duties on January loth, at an annual salary of £2OO.
