MOUNT HUTT ROAD BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING. The Mt. Hutt Road Board met yesterday. Present: Messrs Jas. Carr A. T. Lilley, John "Watson, S. G. Holmes, and W. F, Ruddcnklan. It was decided to-grant £3 to Mr H. Fryer hi Tull satisfaction of his claim against the Board. In connexion with the water supply scheme it was decided to ask the committee of the Ashburton County Council to visit Methven on Thursday, the 14th inst.

Mr Lilley reported that with Messrs Watson and lluddenldau, he had in* spected the storm water channels on the Lyndhurst roa:d, and could not re-' commend the expenditure of "a large sum of money such as new concrete pipes would entail, but probably a little earth could be taken ott' the banks, on each side to ease the grade. The clerk was instructed to carry out the work accordingly.

Mr Gilmour was granted permission to:. plough 1 " the road in front of his property to eradicate gorse. j A request was received from several ratepayers on the Highbank settlement asking for concrete pipes to be placed in the water race crossings in the. vicinity of their farms. It was tie-1 cided to apply to the County Council! for sufficient pipes to do the work, and for pipes for a race in the vicinity of Mr W. T. P. Lock's farm. Prices were received from the Electric Power Board as follows: 60-candle-lamp £2 19s 6d, 100-candle-power lamp £3 2s, 250-candle-power lamp £4 10s,' 4DO-candle-power lamp £7 for each lamp used for street lighting. It was decided to take legal/advice as to whether a special rate could be struck for street lighting ip Methven township. ."■! The Ashburton County Council advised tliat the deviation of the main water, race in the township was estimated to cost £4OO. The Methven Cycle Club wrote ask-: ihg for permission to use the roads in the district for the purpose of holding cycle races. It was decided to hold the matter over and take the advice of other local bodies where similar races are held. A letter was received from the Ashburton County Council's solicitors regarding the procedure for initiating and ; carrying out the proposed water sup- I ply scheme for Methven, and pointing ! out that the present Act does pro- j vide for the scheme to be extended to include ratepayers who do not See their j way to come in at present owing to the | cost. v . I A letter was received from the Canterbury Progress League asking for all complaints regarding railway working etc., to he forwarded to the Christchurch office. I The following tenders for shingle were received: W. Brick 3s per yard, H. 6. Ayers 3s lOd, G- Fairbairn os, S. Leaman 3s 9d, and G. Hutton 3s Bd. It was decided to accept Mr Brick's tender for the supply of 700 yards of shingle- for road work. _ I The-Board's solicitor advised that the Act did not permit road boards to pay for street lighting out of rates, therefore the question devolved on tlie Ashburton County Council to strike a special rate for' this work, or otherwise deal with same. !

Permission to plough road frontages for- the eradication of gorse was granted to Messrs G. Chambers, junr., and 11. Avers.

It was reported that a ratepayer had ploughed his frontage without the Board's permission. It was decided to ask him for an explanation. „ A request was received from Mr C. H. "Watson to have some shingle put on a verv had grass rond jn front of his property. It was decided that this would he the next work undertaken bv the Bo«wd.
