SCHOOL SPORTS.

CHILDREN'S DISPLAY AT LANCASTER. PARK.

Threatening weather had no noticeable effect on the spirits of hundreds of school-children who assembled at Lancaster Park on Saturday morning to take part in the annual athletic sports held under the auspices of the Cantorbury Public Schools' Association. Their optimism was rewarded later in the day by the sunshine and blue sky, which replaced a drizzling rain. Boys and girls, spectators and competitors alike, enjoyed themselves thoroughly, and parents and teachers, though somewhat in the background voted the day a great success. The Association has been particularly unfortunate in its choice of days. The sports were timed to start at noon, but drizzling rain delayed the commencement uutil shortly before one o'clock. Thanks to energetic officials, the events were got off promptly, and the carnival was over very shortly after programme time. As was to bo expected, the competitors were not as numerous as last year, the several postponements aud the weather conditions having taken their toll of those who originally entered. All tho races reflected the keenness of the runners, from the "50yds under eight'' to the '' 880 yds open,'' and many of the competitors showed remarkable promise. The girls took their events very seriously, and spared no effort to attain victory.

The massed display, in which about 300 girls and 250 boys took part, was mo3t spectacular. The girls, dressed in white frocks and black stockings, and the boys in white shirts and black shorts, marched on to the main ground, in perfect time, and assembled i:i open formation. The marching deserved the hearty applause with which it was greeted. The Education Board instructor, Mr G. A. Webb, and instructress, Miss I. Greenwood, took up their 3tand on thS~toof of the main pavilion, and then the band struck up a lilting Scottish air. Led by Miss Greenwood, the girls went through a series of 'neat dancing steps, and the effect was a credit to their mistress. Each movement was clean cut, and the mass moved as a single performer. The boys then gave an exhibition of various Swedish drill exercises, and later there was a display by both sexes which raised the enthusiasm of the spectators. An intricate march completed the programme. The officials were: Judges, Messrs L. B. 'Wood, W. G. Garrard, G. 11. Mason, J. W. McGregor, I\ D. Waller, H. G. Wake, T. Douds, E. Clarke, A. Dey, W. M. West, W. Balch, J. E. Purchase, A. C. Maxwell, W. A. Kuinbold, and W. D. Bean; marksmen, Messrs C. F. Pratt, G. N. Orniandy, G. W. Bishop, J. W. A. Walker, K. H. North, A. Thomson, R. Morgan, S. Mclntyre; timekeepers, Messrs J. Sutherland, W. S. Pratt, J. G. Poison, A. Dickson, and C. [W. Allard: recorders, Messrs D. M. Shirlaw, J. E. R. Smith, T. A. Morland, H. Sparry Heath, W. Cartwright; honorary general secretary, Mr A. H. Guiney; honorary assistantsecretary, Mr D. J. McDonald. Mr P. Selig was to have acted as referee, but the executive received_ a telegram from him regretting his inability to be present. Mr Selig was the founder of the Canterbury Public Schools' Association, and has always taken the keenest interest in the annual gatherings, having acted as referee at nearly every meeting since the sports were instituted. The various events resulted as follows: —
