MOTORING.

SOUTH ISLAND UNION. A meeting of the executive of the South Island Motor Union was held last evening. Present—Messrs J. S. Hawkes (president), N. M. Or bell, W. L. Minson, F. W. Johnston, A. E. Ansell, H. Halliday, and P. Harman (secretary). The Otago Motor Glub wrote advising the commission rates of the various hotels in Dunedin. The Marlborough Association wrote suggesting that bft 6in should be the maximum width allowed on motor vehicles. The matter was left to Mr Orbell to report to the quarterly meeting. The Public Works Department wrote stating that, in accordance with an application from the Pelorus Road Board, steps were being taken ,to set up a Commission to enquire into and apportion the cost of maintenance of the Nelson-Blenheim main road.

Mr Ansell reported briefly upon the .deputation that had waited upon the Hon. J. G. Coates in regard to the Main Highways BilL Mr Ansell spoke in high terms of the manner in which the deputation had been answered by Mr Coates, but expressed regret that the two Boards system, one for each Island, had not been secured. The Board as set up would cost a very large amount per year, just to please the county councils. Mr Halliday said that the extra representatives of the counties would prove of no advantage to the counties, as the Government would still have the balance of power. Mr Halliday spoke of the debt that motorists in general owed to the South Island Union, and to Mr Hawkes and Mr Ansell in particular for their activities in connexion with the Bill.

It was decided that a sub-committee be set up to draft a set of questions to be submitted to candidates for Parconcerning the suggested Motor > chicles Bill, pointing out the Union's objections to the flat rate, etc., and its reasons therefor.
