Timber,, minerals, "and othor goods all show a decreased tonnage, the totals being 5,931,112 tons, against 6,085,360 in the previous year, a decrease of 154,248 tons.
RAILWAY REFORMS. BUSINESS AGENTS APPBOVED. For many years past the Canterbury Cha|nber of Commerce has advocated the appointment by the Railway Department of commercial agents in the centres of the Dominion. Consequently jVIr S. A. Orchard, the president of the Chamber, expressed much gratification tp a representative of "The Press" yesterday, with that portion of the announcement made at Feilding by the Prime Minister relative to the appointment of business agents. The necessity for v careful seiection of these business agents was emphasised by Mr Orchard, r't"We,don't want a gentleman full of pomposity,"., Mr Orchard Baid, "or a man who feels that he has got you in the holjow. of his hand, Mid can' 4o : whafc heJiKes with you. ' Wbat is wanted is 'a man who is reasonable and a w;ho will, look at a thing from both points of view. If the. right man is ap« pointed' he can do a world of good foe the railways and help to put them on a good footing with, the public, and that is Very essential at present. : -
