MEETING OF GENERAL COMMITTEE. The General Committee of the Canterbury A. and P. Association met yesterday. Present:—Messrs R. E. Alexander (president), R. M. D. Morten (jvice president), J. O. McGilKvray (treaaurer); A. Chamberlain, John Deans, J. D. Hall, W. Hayward, R. W. Lochhead, H. E. Peryman, R. Reid, ». W. Westenra (past presidents); Jas. Deans, J. W. Foster, J. C C. Gebbie, Duncan Gillanders, E. Hay, C. G. Jarman, W. J. Jenkins, H. S. S. Kyte, L. R. Macfarlane, A. R. V. Morten, K. J. S. Murchison, J. Nixon, N. M. Orbell, T. H. Overton, Thos Stevenson, and Gordon Stoddart. The chairman said that as this was the first meeting of the new committee he desired to express his thanks for his election as president. He extended a welcome to the new members. Amusement Tax. The Prime Minister, replying to the annual meeting's resolution protesting against the imposition of tho amusement tax on A. and P. Shows, wrote that no one regretted more than he the necessity that arose for -increasing taxation, but the exigencies of the finances of the country demanded that something of the sort should be done, and the Government had no other option than to secure additional revenue, as well as to cut down expenditure wherever possible. As P a ™, ,a " ment had agreed to the proposals which were contained in, the legislation last session, there was no other alternative but to administer the law as it stood. He fully recognised the value tar the community of A. and P. Association s Shows, and realised the difficulty many of them had in arranging their finances. If the financial position improved sufficiently, Government would be very glad to consider the question of relief when dealing with the legislative programme to be submitted to Parliament next session. The letter was received. James Little Memorial Cap. Mr M. Banks, secretary of the New Zealand Corriedale Sheep Breeders' Association wrote': —"At a recent meeting of this Association it waß resolved that this Association obtain a silver cup (valued about £4O) and to ask if vour committee would accept same for .competition at future shows held by your Association. The cup is to be known as 'The James Little Memorial|Oup,' and is offered to perpetuate the memory of that well-known sheep-breeder. The cup to he awarded the exhibitor gaining most points in the Corriedale section at the Christchurch Shows, and will be held by the winner for one year. The cup is not to be won outright, but the winner, each is to have hia. name inscribed on the cup." The president's motion, "That the cup be accepted on the conditions stated," was carried by acclamation. Champion Dairy Cow. The Canterbury Central Co-operative Dairy Company wrote that in consideiation of the A. and .P. Association agreeing to a class for "champion dairy cow or heifer, in profit (any breed), the judge appointed not to be a past or present breeder of pure stock,' the company would have in presenting a Champion Ribbon; three or more entries to be received. - It was decided to refer the letter to the Cattle Committee. Seed Cleaning OffaL The Minister of Agriculture wrote regarding the 'annual meeting's resolution with respect to the disposal of offal from seed-cleaning machines, that he would be pleased to receive a de nutation next time he waa in Canterbury on public business. The president, the vice-president, an<i Mr *F. Hubbard, were appointed the members of the deputation. ' Railway Matters. The Hon. D. H. Guthrie, ActingMinister of Railways, wrote that the Association's representations as to steps being, taken'by the Railway Department to improve matters connected with the carriage-: of agricultural and -pastoral products had been noted and would be carefully considered. Mr W. Stringleman, District Traffic Manager, wrote asking the.Association to supply information as to the better fatsliaie4 idesired in connexion with the carriage of agricultural and pastoral produce. '•■.,•„., Referred- to the Special Railway Committee. Council of Agriculture. . The New Zealand Council of Agrieulture wrote that the annual conference would be held on July 19th and 20th. . The president and vice-president (Messrs Alexander and Morten) were appointed the Association's delegates. Tne matter of preparing remits was referred to a committee. ' ..

Trotting Traffic The Tramway Board wrote asking if the Association would be' prepared tolease to the Board at a peppercorn rental, three perches at the corner of Westenra street for the purpose of temporarily widening. Westenra street to permit of the better regulation of taxi and motor traffic from the trotting grounds. The matter was referred to the Grounds Committee to consult with representatives of the Board on. the ground. Annual Meeting Eesolutions.

Regarding the representation or country A. and P. Associations on the General Committee of the Canterbury A and P. Association, it was decided: "That an invitation be extended to the president (or his nominee) of kindred associations in Canterbury to attend meetings of the General Committee to take part in discussions on general topics but with no power to vote. As to supporting the attempt of the Council of Agriculture in its endeavourto co-ordinate the work of the several organisations representing the farming industry, it was decided to set Upa committee, consisting of Messrs": w. Lochhead, John Deans, fl. A. KnijFV and J. D.
