FAILURE TO REGISTER AS ALIEN.
v TJNTJSTJAI CIEOUMSTAN)OES. (rEESS ASSOCIATION/ TILKORAM.} WELLINGTON, April 11. Unusual circumstances were revealed by the prosecution of Joseph Crook for failure to register as an alien. The case was'heard by Mr P. K. Hunt, S.M., to-day. , Crook was born in the United King, dom, said Sub-Inspector McNamara, who prosecuted. He went to the United States, and remained there for seven years, when-he. returned, to tne United Kingdom and married. He then went back to the United States, where he became an American • citizen. Seven years later be came to New /lealand and had been, here ten years. He obtained employment at _ the meat woiks and bad remained there ever since. He :oow desired to. return America with the balance of his family. He applied for a passport as an American citizen and registered yesterday. In all oases it was necessary, the bubInspector said, that & person should .be under the Act. . Tim ponce were not, however, pressing for a story was that he considered the fact of his having been born on British soil made it unnecessary for him to register. ' ' "Oh, well, be has been here ten years," said the>Magistrate, # who convicted Crook, and ordered him to pay costs.
