PROPOSED REDUCTIONS IN
WAGES.

It is stated that the ship owners propose to ask the engineers to agree to reductions in wages ranging from 80s to 10s a month accor4ifig to their rank. In the case of stewards the owners propose a reduction of 39s a month and cooks x3s a month. If a conference <f ails to arrinre at an agreement the owners will submit their claims to the Arbitration Court.
THREAT BY SEAMEN'S LEADEE,

MELBOURNE. March 9,
Mr Walsh, president of the Seamen's Union, addressing the Bench in the Arbitration Court on the minutes of the proposed award' in the case of the Seamen's Union against the Treasurer of Queensland, said that if the seamen of New South Wales did not get their rights, they themselves would deal with the owners.

Mr Hughes has announced that, owing to the interference of the Australian Seamen's Union with the management of the Commonwealth liner Largs Bay, it was impossible for the Government to continue its present shipping policy, which would be reconsidered.
