BOWLING.
NOTES BY "SKIP." Mr Walter Wyatt, of Dunedin,-visit-ed Christchurch • last week, and spent several days on the local greens. He has now quite recovered from his serious illnes3, and he certainly showed that he is again playing up to his old form. In a match against the winners of last year's Easter tournament, he played a magnificent game, and beat them with a fair margin of points to spare. Mr James Angus, who is well-known here a3 an old Rangiora player, but latterly of Ashburton, has now- joined the staff of Messrs J. A. Redpath and Sons, of this city, and will plav for the Canterbury Club when his_ duties permit. Mr Angus made his initial appearance on Saturday afternoon, when he skipped a rink for his new club. The Sydenham "Club celebrates its twenty-first birthday this ana to mark the occasion considerable alt-era-tions and improvements have been made to the green and pavilion. At present the club membership is ninety-seven, but it is hoped before the season closes it will be well over the century mark. It may be added that the majority cf the alterations have been made by the players themselves during leisure liour£, and it speaks well for the club when such enthusiasm is shown. ■Several rinks will journey to Dunedin from the Sj'denhatn club to take part in the Dominion tournament. Amongst the rinks already made up are: Beasley, Turnbnll. Mitchell, and W. Spiller (s); Woodnam, "Wilson, Jacobson, Hollis fs); and Cosgrove, Rawlinson, Freeman, Dobbs (s). A pleasiag' function took place at the Auckland Bowling Club's green the other day, when the Hon. A. M. Mvers, who will shortly be leaving for England, was elected a life-member or the club in the presence of a large gathering of members. The president, Mr W. Culpan, in making the presentation of a life-member's gold medal to Mr Myers, spoke of the recipient s honoured connexion with the club, of which he had been president from 1901 to 1903 and again from. 1914 to 191 o. It could not be forgotten, he said, that Mr Myers, a 9 a member of the club, and as a citizen of Auckland, was leaving behind him lasting mementoes or his works and great generosity. "Few, if any, in New Zealand had equalled Mr Myers as a benefactor. Mv x J. Carlaw, past president and next oldest member, also referred to Mr Myers s great hospitality and his services to the athletic and sporting interests of Auckland; Mr Myers, who was accompanied by Mrs Myers, senr., thanked the club for the honour bestowed upon him, and in appreciative terms to the same in which he had participated tuat afternoon. The Opawa Bowling. Club jiad per-1 haps the most successful'day ki its existence ,on November 19th, when, with eleven rinks competing in Pennants, only one. game was lost. A' most peculiar situation arose in the games play-ed-by the club against Linwood, _i n the b Pennant, at Linwood. Each of the two rinks tied with their opponents, and as they did not play off, they are wondering how the Centre will decide it. It is practically impossible to get the four rinks together to' plav one head, and perhaps the fairest thing to do is-to allot each club-half a point-. . The Op&wa green is playing splendidly this season, and praise a due to Messrs Watkins and Brown','the-.green I superintendent, and his assistant, and to the new greenkeeper, Mr Milner. Last Saturday , seven Pennant rinks . we're on it, and. there was not a-grumble from*: one of' them. The competitions, of : the Opawa Club are progressing rapidly, and; already goodly number of singles have been played, while doubles ana rinks have made a start. The cold evenings—all- the matches have-to be played in the evenings—have somewhat militated against the .rush of play wheh took place last season, but with the warmer evenings coming on •it is probable great, strides will- be made with the competitions. A number of' new members have been added to the roll, but as they are nearly all new their presence will be felt in ' the', handicap event?., The Akaroa .bowling green is.now in .fine playing trim,' ana the Thursday half-holiday finds a good attendance of members' and usually a. fine sprinkling of visitors happily enjoying a few hours (tt the ancient game. The club has gained ; a number of new members this season. Just now the committee is arranging tournaments for The club is dismayed at the approaching departure from Akaroa of its vice-president, Mr D. P. Portebus, the local postmaster, who has been transferred, on promotion, on. relieving . dutv in Otago. Mr Porteous, who is in the forefront of Akaroa players, spares neither time, -energy, rior trouble in advancing the interests and welfare of the club. An old stalwart of the game in.Dtinedin, Mr James Hunter, has just been called away at the age, of eighty-three. In* days gone by he .was a very prominent Jmcm her of Dunedin Club, and Was a leading player in this city. He was of the old school, always ready to assist to . the utmost the beginner, and "Measurer" of the Dunedin ,-l' Star." baa pleasant memories of the valuable advice willingly given by Mr Hunter when a member of Dunedin Club in the earlv davs. Many will read of his death with real regret. RECORD OF THE BOWLING TOUR. (from ore own correspondent.) LONDON, October 7. Members of the team already in New Zealand will receive by this mail copies of a. booklet entitled "The Dominion of New Zealand-Bowling Team," which' is a record of the tour'of Great Britain arid Ireland. The "copy" was evidently put in the hands of the printer promptly, and the booklet was published last week. The work of, compiling it was begun , by Mr J. D. Sievwright, but after his departure from England other members of the team took it in hand and saw it through the press. It is a full record of . the various match**, with some interesting details regarding the social events along the line of route. Doubtless a really full account of the innumerable experiences of the team, and the lavish hospitality bestowed upon them, would fill a far larger volume, but in the ninety-four pages- the booklet contains readers will get some idea "of the really strenuous time the bowlers were called upon to undergo} The tour, as everyone acknowledged, was a liberal education for those paxt, andj.as Sir'« James Allen points out in a foreword to -the present- volume, did something towards creating & still better feeling between the Dominion and the\Mother!and. "The recent visit of the New Zealand bowlers was feost opportune," the High Commissioner writes: "They have travelled s England, Scotland, Ireland, and Wales at a time when economic difficulties troubled the Mother Country,, and when Ireland needed a sympathetic visit from oversea sportsmen. There is no doubt that the visit of the New Zealand bowlers to Ireland was well timed, and that it did good. So, too, their presence in Great Britain has, it is honed, done something to lighten the . trials of tie- -Mother Country, and~sas stimulated good feeling and fellowship betwen the United Kingdom Innd her promising offspring in New Zealojjd." •. So. far, the. printers have croduced
500 copies of the booklet. Of these, 200 will be distributed among the clubs in Groat Britain and Ireland, and the remaining 300 go to the various members of the team. j CENTRE PENNANT COMPETITION.
