The Calm arrived from Timaru yesterday (morning, and ia to sail this afternoon for Wellington arid Wanganui. The Orepuki ie to tail for Greymouth tomorrow, and the Opihi for Auckland on Wednesday. A x>cpular Union Company master p&taed away on Thursday at Onehunpa—Captain John Grant, of Barbour View terrace. He was born 70 years ago at Cromarty, Scotland. For many years he was in the Union Company's boats, and for sixteen years was master of the Takapnna. which was well known In the Omhunga-Wellington trade. Captain Grant was a particularly oareiul navigator, and' no <ma was more popular with his pattagers. The Union Compnyhas besn singularly fortunate in its'master*, and Captain Giant was typical of the beat of titers. For the past fifteen years he had been living in retirement. He leaves a -widow and thfce© sons.
