THE FISHERIES ACT.
TO THE EDITOR OF "THE PBESS."' giTj—ln yours of Xovenber SOth appears «x report of a "Breach of the Fisheries Act." Mr Archer, who appeared for the Acclimatisation Society, stated that certain fishermen had run riot, sud ! liad taken enormous quantities of fish out of the rivers. Now, in fairness to all parties concerned, the Society, the Society ranger, the fishermen, and myself, I am quite certain that nothing our. of tho ordinary has happened. I. ouit-e agree with tie recent conviction, but, Sir, Mr Archers remarks were auite uncalled for regarding the fishermen upon Lake Ellesmere. We fill know that a certain number of tront are caught in drag-nets and on odd fish in set-nets, hut members of the Society know that it cunnot ho avoided. The fishermen hero know that I am an. honorary ranger, and they also know that my sympathies are with the •Society, but m t!;o fr.co of those remarks, mv sympathy is quite with tlho fishermen.—Yor.vs etc., T. H. OVERTON". Lakeside, December Ist.
