v , - A very pronounced thunderclap, accompanied by vivid lightning, occurred at Tauranga on Saturday morning. The lightning struck oh old bluegum tree about 60ft high growing on the property opposite the Bellvue Boarding House. The tree bears visible scarring for almost the whole length of its trunk. Hundreds of splinters and branches were knocked on and hurled as far as Cameron road, about cO yards away, fortunately no one was struck by any of tho flying splinters. A new house is being erected on the eastern side of Cameron road in a line diagonal with the tree. One of the carpenters engaged on the building came within the sphere of the lightning track, and was struck on the right arm, which Tvas numbed for some little time. He suffered no serious ill effects, however. The pane of a window on the western side of Bellvue House was shattered, and a man in the backyard felt slight effects from the lightning.
