Vast areas in the west are still being swept by fire. One block estimated at twenty thousand square miles is aflame Altogether, millions of acres have been devastated. Details so far are meagre, but it is known that the damage is enormous. The first life lost has been reported ; from Cardlebig, where a returned soldier was burned to death while trying to save his wife and two children. One child escaped by digging its way into a rabbit warren. Three sleeper cutte« in the same district are missing. It in believed that most of the fires originated through railway fettlers burning off. ADELAIDE, November 7. Bush fires are sweeping the Olary district and destroying millions of acres of grass country.
