THE TURF.

QUARTERLY STATISTICS. (SPECIALLY WBITTEK TOE "THE PBISS.") (By Clanranald.) In spite of the fact that the present racing season is only three months old, it speaks volumes for the richness of stakes in New Zealand nowadays when eightv-three horses can win amounts ranging from £2335 to £3OO in this short time. In addition, there must be added the very great number whose winnings so far range from 300 sovs to 10 sovs. It may come as a surprise to racegoers to learn that at this stage, Molyneux, with 2335 eovs, is in the premier position. The Danube—Perle d'Or gelding has a good record, for out of six starts he has been placed first three times and third twice. His successes in the Avondale Cup and Plumpton Handicap at the Avondale Jockey Club's Soring Meeting largely account for his stake-money. Amythas, with 1G23 sovs, is second on the list, and providing he keeps sound he should soon pass the present leader. His record reads three wins and twice unplaced for five starts, his best race so far being the Champion Plate at Trentham. Coalition's success in the Grnud National Steeplechase.places him in third berth with 1500 sovs. a total to which he may add when the winter comes round. Even at this earlv stage, the most successful juvenile, Epitaph, has gained fourth positon, having accredited her owner with 1310 sovs This filly womisos to do good service for Mr A. B. Williams, and should continue to occupv a prominent r.osition right thronch the season. Grladful's is a nnrallel case tn Coalition's, his fifth nlnce. with 1225 sovs. being due to his Oand National Hurdles success. Rational, with 1200 sovs. is the last of the first hnlf-dozen, but many will lie greatly disappointed if the Absurd irelding does "not go on adding to his nlrendv rood account. Un to the present time, twentysix of" Absurd's get ' have' returned 7260 sovs in stakes, and although the stock of this- sire come to hand early, and apparently do better in the spring and early summer months, his prospects this year look rosy for tnking even a higher place than he gained last season. Mr J. F. Buchanan's great little horse, Martian, however, is hard to beat, and is already in second place with twenty-five winners of stake-money totalling 4359 sovs. Contrary to Absurd, Martian may do better in the autumn, and they should be closer together than at the end of last season, when Martian was m premier position, with 30.735, sovs, and' Absurd third ; with ,21,215 sovs, /Demosthenes being second with 24,679 sovs. Demosthenes at' present is in third position, with 3975 sovs, nineteen of his sons and daughters having contributed to this total. Owing to Molyj neux, Danube is in fourth nlace with 2380 bovs, next coming Birkenhead, with ten winners of 2276 soys. In spite of the bar sinister on his pedigree. Advance, with seven.winners of 2160 sovs, is in sixth place, a creditable record, in consideration of his handicap. The leading sires are:— ■ • ... Stakes. Name. ~ .
