CANTERBURY JOCKEY CLUB.

METROPOLITAN MEETING. KEW ZEALAND CUP DAT. « The New Zealand Cup meeting, with its wealth of historic interest, is one of the great features of the racing year in the Dominion, and there is every indication that the meeting, which opens to-day at Iticcarton will maintain the high standard that has always characterised the Canterbury Jockey Club's gatherings. Tho fields engaged represent the Dominion's best horses, the course is in first-class order, and the large crowd that is sure to be present will see racing conducted under ideal conditions. The first race will start at noon, and those going to Riccarton will find a very good tram service awaiting them in Cathedral Square, while a very convenient service of special trains has also been arranged. Ore Ore, a well-bred jumper, looks well placed in the Spring Hurdles for a horse that has won twice and been placed on two other occasions in four starts. The Linwoorl Handicap, has a lot of hn'-ks engatred that should make racing history when thev become seasoned, for Valrlamo, Wnrhtie, Kerb, Tho Reaver, and Bonnie TV'nkie aro all more than useful. The New Zealand Cup is one of the most open races since its initiation, when Tasman won. The work of the numerous runners has been fo even that he would be a bold man who would select any one horse to win, without a reservation. On public form Snnnrt looks the best, but on track work. Vagabond. Si>«anof; Starland, Royal Star, Isabel, Warlove, Pluto and Prm'tent have no advance ove' - each other. Snnnrt. Royal Star and Starland look the brichtest. but. Warlove and Tasthp] may heat the three of them. The Welcome Stakes will introduce to Riccarton the Absurd—Eulogy fillv Enitnnh, perhaps the best two-vear-old that hn« ever contested a Welro~p RtpW. The Stewards' Handicap field is without doubt the best that has ever contested the race. Two three-vear-old eeldincrs are attemntino: to nut up weii<rht-T'arryinrr records' f«r their acre, and many think thev will do .it. but some of the older division onfaped look sure to beat them.
