ARTERIAL ROADS.

: A'WAIMAIEI DISCUSSION.

The Government's Vain Highways Bill was briefly discussed at lost night's meeting of th* Waimairi County; Council. The matter arose out. of the reading of a report (on the.lines of those already published) from the Counties' Association, with reference xo the/BUi. ' The chairman (Mr W,.J;JWWter) said that the matter - tra's » very important one.' The report should be carefully considered by members before the matter was dealt with Ay the Council. The Waimairi County, he said, was in an unfortunate position, in tha* it had more main roada-.to >maintaiu than any, ether local bod; within miles of the city. Last year the County had aperit nearly £4OOO on main "roads. A few years ago the cost to the County was less lhan £2OOO. Most of the

trouble was due to motors. Where! there was little motor traffic roads! were usually found to be iu good xmkrJ It would be all right if motors did noti travel .at an'exoesdive speed. The times had arrived- when, if the (jtovernmenlf did not do something, the .Co unci must. Mr J. Seymour said that local bodict had been-asking the Government foi years past to take over the main road? Now that it was making an effort to <l< so, the local bodies were objecting be cause the provisions of the Bill wer not quite to 'their liking. The tax ox motors was certainly heavier than the; expected it would be. He considers that the counties should hare a portioi of the money raised to spend on thei roads.

After further desultory discussion, i was decided to supply a copy of th report to eaoh. member of toe Council ana to defer discussion of the-matte till the Council's next meeting.

Carl Xiuuann, of Copenhagen, laid' wager that he would eat twenty-si hard-boiled eggs if the report of gigno Caruso's death was confirmed. Th wager, was accepted, and when the w port was confirmed Nnmahn, ordere and ate the twenty-six eggs. An ho\i afterwards he died.
