The (Cr. J. A> Flesher) gave to the City Council last night a brief sketch of the_reoent Municipal Conference held in Wellington. He said that 112 remits were considered, and two-thirds were adopted. All the remits sent- forward by the Christchurch City Council, less two, were approved of. The two not endorsed were those, relating to the issue of £5 debentures, and the rawing of money for war memoriala by way of special order. An important remit was adopted to give local bodies power to raise loans for public works without having to take a poll unless 10 per cent, of the ratepayers, by petition, demanded a poll. That proposal, if it became law, and there was every expectation it would, would enable local bodies to raise money for such things as bridges and' the like without going to the expense of taking a poll-
