CASUALTIES.

A PARMER'S DEATH. Death from exposure to cold was the verdict of the jury at an inquest at Oxford yesterday, before Mr James Cook, J.Jf., Acting-Coroner, oottoemjig the death of Jonn Gailand, farmer, Bennetts, whose body was found on a road through the manuka scrub in the west jjjyreton County, on Monday morning. James Garland, a brother of the deceased, stated toat he left home in his car on Friday to go to Hangiora and ! afterwards to Christchurch, to spend the,week-end. It was inexplicable to witness why deceased had gone to the ; place where his body was lound. He ' did not live a very temperate life, but was a careful car-driver, and had always been able to find his way home. | He enjoyed good health. Arthur Blackmore, farmer, gave evidence in regard to meeting '• deceased in I his car at 10 p.m. on Friday, and afterwards finding his body on Monday j morning near the same spot. He added that when he saw deceased on Friday night he was fairly sober, and that he found a whisky bottle with a small quon. tity of spirit in it, near the car, and another whisky bottle empty, near the body. Dr. It. A. Bagley, who made a postmortem examination, stated that there were no marks of violence on the body, and it was that of an apparently healthy man. There was slight evidence of alcoholism, but sufficient to account for death. The-e »were many indications of suffering from extreme cold, and he was of opinion that death was due to exposure to cold. (rSXSS ASSOCIATION TKtKQJUUt.) WELLLNGION, August 10.
