THE NEW POLITICAL PARTY.
ATTITXTDE OF MAYOE Ol' WEIiLINCrTON. (SPECIAL TO "THE PBESS.") WELLINGTON, August 9. The Mayor of Wellington \Mr R. A. Wii"bt. M.P.) has declined a request from Mr C. E. Statham, M.P., to preside at his meeting to launch the new National Progressive and Moderate Labour Party hero on the -24 th mst. Mr Statiham contrasts Mr Wright's action with that of Dr. Thacker, M.P., . u* Christchurch, and of the Mayor of Dunedih, who is president of the local executive. '
The Mayor of Wellington,, however, is not likely to lose any sleep over Air StaiJiiatn's protest, for the new"'tree lor ail party," as it Has been called, is not taken, .seriously here, either by politicians or by the great mass of the people. Whether or not in the course or a few yeait. it can be worked up to become a potent political force remains to be seen. Its following in tho present Parliament will undoubtedly be very small.
It is understood that Mr W. A. Veiteh, M.P., w'ho was either a member of tho small band that originally launched the party, or was expected to become a prominent member of it, has nulled out, and that Mr Statiiam'a sole Parliamentary supporter is Air J£. Kellett, ALP.
