BAHCUOBA. The final of a snootier tournament conducted by the billiards section of the RangioraVßowling, Tennis and Croquet Club was played on Saturday night. It. Kinloy won the first prize, a billiard cue, presented by Mr James Marshall, I. G. Grierson took the second prize, and S. Webber the prize for the highest break. There were 24 competitors. A handicap billiards tournament is now in progress. t KAIAPJL At a meeting of the Kaiapoi School Committee held on Monday evening, it was decided to adopt the headmaster's suggestion that a queen»carnival be held before the Christmas holidays to raise funds for school improvements. • AKABOA. At a meeting of the directors of the Peninsula isaleyards Company, held at on Friday, tiiere were present : Messrs R. Latter (chairman), J. T. W. Wiikins, and W. W. Williams. The Auctioneers' Association, Christchurch, wiote suggesting the discontinuance of the mid-monthly sales durinor the spring, pointing out, among other things, that such little business was done as to make them a waste of time and money to all concerned. Messrs A. Cook (Mateon and Co.), J. Nottingham (Pyne, Gould, Guinness, Ltd.), and | ( W. Thompson (Daigety and Co.), waited i'on the directors to discuss the matter. I Eventually it was decided that no more mid-monthly sales should:be held tSIs year at least, special sales to take their place as required. The secretary reported that yarding fees for the July sale had totalled £8 13s 6d. The Loan and .vlercantile Agency Co., Ltd., wrote stating that that they did not intend to continue the lease of an office at the salejards. KIBWEE. At a meeting of the Ploughing Match Committee, Mr J. W. Beigravej presided. It was decided to amalgamate with Pa.parua, and to hold a ploughing match at "Lawford," next month. The following were added to the committee, for the Paparua district: Messrs W. McMeekan, J. Selby, R. McMeekan. A. R. Carter, T. Hight, H. Cross, and Wright. After a few hours' cold, north-west wind on Sunday morning, another storm came up from the south-west, accompanied by sleet and snow showers, the ground being again covered with about an inch of snow. It began to freeze early in the evening, and on Monday morning the hardest frost of the season was recorded. BAKAIA. There was a very narrow escape from serious injury in an accident which occurred at the Rakaia railway station just before the arrival of the second express from Christchurch on Saturday. Breading, have been very pleased with their stay in the district, and by a happy inspiration decided to show their appreciation by organising a *hard-up" social for the residents. The dance took place in Mrs Burns's granary, and was a very' enjoyable affair. The decorations were tasteful, and good, music was supplied by Misses Burns, Barber, and Bennett, and Messrs W. Shellock and A. N. Barber. The M.C. was Mr Griffiths. Miss Heather Burns .gave a pianoforte solo, and danced Highland fling, fcongs were sung by ?:*.• Harple, and the Mead Jazz Ifrnd contributed selections. Recita' tons were given by Mr Holland snd Mr Griffiths. The prizes for tho best costumes were awarded by poi-'lar vote. The winners were:—Ladies, Miss Monkman-; gentlemen, Mr H. Stubbs. During an interval, Messrs Holland and Harple expressed the thanks of the men to Mrs Burns for her kindnesses, and to the people for attending. Mr Wm. Shellock responded on behalf of the guests. , _i , . At the last meeting of the Rakaia School Committee, there were present i the Rev. A. S. Morrison (chairman), ! Rev. E. Blakiston. and Messrs A. A. Oliver and A. F. Kenneth. The headI master's report showed a roll number of 160 and an average attendance # of 145. The following motion, wal oamed in silence, members standing:—'.That 'this committee has learned with sincere regret of the death of the late Mr Lionel Saunders, and hereby records its deep sense of loss by the removal of a worthv citizen and a very zealous and valuable member of this committee." It wns agreed to make inauiries as to the delay in the supplv of dual desks, which had been promised because of the increased roll-number. It was resolved tn have a working bee of parents on Arbor Day afternoon ._ to : assist in. planting trees and An 'doing j some other work in the grounds.
