MUNICIPAL CONCERT HALL.

TO THE EDITOR OF "THE PRESS." Sir,—l have readrlately,. and with a good deal of concern, that it has been practically decided to build a large hall on the old Canterbury Hall site. What i.he Mayor and the supporters of this idea are thinking about is very lhard to understand, but it is quite certain they are not looking far into the As a ratepayer, I think an t up-to-date theatre would be a far better paying proposition to the city than a hall. The old Canterbury Hall was a similar building to the one now being designed, but was eventually turned ' into . a theatre, by the companythat owned It, whidh is in itself sufficient proof that a hall has not the earning capacity of a theatre. Another very good reason why a hall should not be built is that it is only a matter of time, when we will, I hope, have a Town Hall; then tflie one it is proposed to erect now would become a useless burden on the city, and would certainly be an unsaleable proposition. —Yours, etc _ J.J.H, Juiy 22nd.
