CONTEST FOR SAHJNO CHAMPIONSHIP. (PRESS ASSOCIATION TEtEORAU.) AUCKLAND, March 24. The first race in the contest for the N-.Z. Championship for 14ft one-design sailing boats between Lord Jellicoe'3 Iron Duke (Auckland Yacht Club) atd Mr W. J. P. McCulloch's Heather (Otago Yacht Club), was sailed to-day. A fresh breeze suited the Heather, which won by lmin Msec. Lord Jellicoo waa not at the helm of the Iron Duke to-day. March 25. The second race took place -to-day, when the Iron Duke, which was sailed by Lord Jellicoe, beat the Heather by 60scc. The contest for the championship extends over five races. The remainder will be mailed to-day, and on Monday, and Tuesday. Besides the championship in the 14ft class, the winner of the series will hold the Sanders Memorial Challenge Cup. This very handsome trophy has been presented by Messrs Walker and Hall, jewellers and 'silversmiths, of Auckland, The trophy has "been dedicated to the memory of the late Lieutenant-Com-mander W. E. Sanders, Y.C., 1X5.0., R.N.11.. and on one of the panels is a record by the Lords of the Admiralty of the super' horoism. which marked the death of iL.» gallant Auckland officer during the war at sea. It reads: "The Prize was sunk on August 14th in the Atlantic on a dark and stormy night, and he* gallant commander, Lieutenant-Commander W. E. Sanders, who in a short! five months has been awarded the V.C. and the D.5.0., in command of her, went down beneath the Atlantic? wave, leaving his name to be inscribed imperishably on the same Roll of Naval History wnere stand the names of Blake, Nelson, and others."
