COUNTY COUNCILS.

The monthly meeting l of tie Ka-ikoura County Council was held on Friday., Present —Gib. S. Andrew (chairman), I>. Boyd, J. Boyd, G. Smith, and C. Nilsen. The Hon. J. G. Coatfca, Minister of Pnlblio' Works, wrote thanking the* cliflinmaß, and councillors for their hospitality during his sojourn in Kaikoura. - A petition waa received from. &|number of ratepayers, asking that a bridge be ereotedi across the creek in. Gilling's lane. It waa decided .that the engineer prepare an estimate of the cost of erecting l a bridge. The> Flaxbourne Settlers' Association forwarded' a copy of a resolution in reference ta the expenditure of the £15,000 vote foT the South Island Main Trunk railway, and atked the co-operation, of the Council in urging the expenditure of the grant. The Council expressed ita sympathy with the resolution, and promised l its support. The resident engineer forwardedi a schedule «» to unexpended Government grant*, pointing out that application -would bo necessary to hare the vote® reinstated. The Council decided to make application to have the grants provided for next estimates. • A communication was received from Mr Acton-Adams in connexion with' the Quail Flat track and the Government grant. In reference to the construction of Tre-k-re's roadv the grant for which was insufficient, the Council decided to request that the Public Works Deportment carry out the work. A ooniplaint was received from Charles Biisohett in reference to the danger of a' rope s placedi aorosa the! steps of the old wharf. Too wharfinger wae instructed to take what action he thought necessary to ttbate the 1 ruis-ance. ■ 5 . A letter was received from, the Marine Department approving the plan® and site for, vvharf and reclamation, work. It was agreed that tenders be called foT the work. Permission was granted the Kaikoura Fisherman's Association to itnake a charge for admission to. the wharf at a regatta to bo 'held in April. It-was decided to fix the dog tax at 2s 6d-. far sheep oadi rabbit dogs, aid 10s for pets;' Cr; Andrew.- stated that the Minister of Pii'blio Works had caked /that the Council should caTry out the boat harbour works, for wihichi £IOOO had' been allotted. He moved ;that tenders bo called for the work. The motion was oarried. In reference to on,application from the Defettoe Bifle Club for permission to erector telephone to tie 700 yds range at the South Bay Domain, the Domain- Board granted) permission*- subject to there being no inconveni'ence to others using tho Domain. OXFORD. ■ At the monthly meeting of the Oxford County Council there were present—Cre R. ! P Hendereon (chairman)-, Alex. Baxter, 1\ Powell, J. McGrath, D. Hawks, H. F. Duers, and E. ]W„ Meyer. The monthly report, whioE was adopted, stated t(hat tho ehing-ling of South Eyre road bad been completed; a start had been, made to eooop out the pan in the main drain at Cooper's; the catch roc® at the Eyre dam had been uncovered so that the shingle oould bo cleared l out of the pipeß, and a shingle cistern put, in. A letter was received from the Bangiora Cc-unty Council, etating that the Council -had made a yearly grant of £lO towards the interest and sinking fund- on tho loan raised for the erection otf OxfoTd Maternity Hospital. Mr Gorton waited on the Council and | asked ' permission to use the Main Eyre water-race for ' generating electrical power. The Council stated that, while in sympathy with the scheme, they would have to seet the plana and specifications of the plant before deciding. / The rain reports for tie month were:— Messrs Croy Bros., 6.51 in; Mr _T. Frame, 8.41 in; Mr H. A. Prichard, o.flSin. It was decided to put a eeat under the tieea oni Hospital road, and iojlengthan the wire bolster above Burnt Hill, ford, the Ikmiain Board and It.
