ASHBURTON. Tho monthly meeting' of the AshburtonCounty Council wa<s held yesterday. -Present -Councillors C. Reid (chairman), G. Murdoch, H. B. C. WithelL W. Lochead, A. J. Ma-son, A. Horsey, T. BlackTey, H. Uaginais," F. Frampton, W. T. Lill, TV. G. Gailasher, W. W. Goodwin. The chairman stated that £9250 had been collected of the water charges sinco July lust. Of the. rate of £11,400 which, was struck last Am'il, there waa still £2155. to he collect, ed. A total of £3545 had been struck for water charges- in July last, and of this £2216 had been collected, leaving £1322 .still to be collected. , ~ , A discussion took place on the question ot, rabhit poisoning. It was decided that in future poison be laid at four different perwda of the year. , On the motion of Cr. Blackley, it was decided that the engineer ho instructed to make erouirics for a plant for concrete pipe making. The engineer reported on the cost of bridging the various water-races in the Rangi-. tata and the Ashburton-Rakaia, districts. The total cost for the Rangitata district would be £88,659, and the cost for bridgingtil the present water-races in the AshburtonRakaia, district would bo £184,330, or a. total cost for the whole of the Ashburton county of £2,78,018. , . . ~ . ~ Members expressed the opinion that the question was a very big one, and it was decided to postpone consideration of the matter till the next meeting. A letter waa received; from the Coldstream Road Board protesting against the proposed Geraldino River Board, which would have control oF portions of the banks at the Rangitata"river which are in the AsbJburton county. The Council decided to suppport tho Coldstream Road Board in its protest. It. was decided to raise the salary of. Miss Rose Brown, the lady assistant-secretary, from £2OO to £223 per annum. The South Rakaia Road Board made application for' 300 feert of concrete pipes for culverts for wa.ter-ra.ceg, mainly for bridging the races on the Main South road. It was decided to supply the pipea as soon as they v/ero availalble. It was decided to a?k the Ashburton Fire Brigade the reason the members did' not attend <ir fire which recently took place in a porne fenoe a.r.d in, a plantation at the Ashr burton racecourse. MALVERN. The Malvern Couuty Council met on. Tues. day. Present—Crs. Knight (chairman), Reid, Culler*,' Murc-hison, and Judd Correspondence was redd from the Tawera. County Council with regard to licensing paoV lars and hawkers This waa deferred for further information as to the category of com-1 mercial travellers. • A ratepayer wavjto stating that he had obtained permission from a neighbour to tap a water-race supplying his property. It was decided to draw his attention to the fact that all water-races -were .under the control of 'the Council, and no. alteration could he | made without its consent. It was resolved to close Haari's road near South Malvern and the road between rural sections 33719 and 14361, ending at Mr A. Gunn's homestead. Owing- io recent wet weather, it was decided to ask the contractor to leave the hill country work for the present and go on with the 'Telegraph road near Barfield. The Council then sat as a Domain Board, and the annual report and balance-sheet were approved and passed; subject to audit.
