ST. ANDREW'S COLLEGE.

! PRIZE-GIVING DAY. The annual prize-giving in connexion with Su Andrew's College -took place yesterday afternoon. Tho Rev. Dr. Erwin presided over, a large attendance, with him on tho platform being the Mayor, members of the Board of Governors and of tho staff, and a number of ladiefc. , . , Dr. Erwin, in the cour.se of a bnel address, saiu that tho past year iia.it been one of the most important sind successful in the lito of the college. At tiie end of last year, the fust headmaster had sent in his resignation, ana the Board liad the important task ot suitably filling Ins place, but in Mr Anderson they had got the right man tor tho position. (Applause). lhey could not have made a better or a happier selection. (Applause.) There- was now an entirely dilferent atmosphere m tho College, which it was always a pleasure, to visit. Mr Anderson took a deep personal interest in every brancn of the school, in his staff, and in each individual scholar. Br. Erwin also detailed various changes that had taken place in the staff during tho past year, referring in particular to tho loss sustained in tho approaching departure for l\ T ew South Wales of Mr A. J. Goombes. Mr W. Goss, a member of the. Board of Governors, briefly addressed the boys and parents, urging both to keep up tho spirit of loyalty to the College in every possible way, and impressing upon the boys the: main factors making for good manhood and good citizenship. Tho Mayor also gavo a short address, giving Teminiscenoas of his days, at Edinburgh University, and eulogising Scotland' «and the-Scottish, people. Dr. Thacker, in speaking of athletics, said that Mrs Thacker had given a cup. to St. Bede's Cpllogo for Jirter-sccondary school competition for a. 10u yards event. Personally, Jie had been so impressed with the. performance of the winner of the mile event at St. Andrew's sports, Rutledge, that he had decided to give a cup to St. Andrew's for an interschool mile competition, and he irou-ld also give a gold medal for the winner each year. (Appluase.) The headmaster, Mr A. K. Anderson, accepted the offer with thanks. Mr Anderson gave an outline of the sj'stem adopte'd in the College, and paid a very high tribute to the fine work done in all branches of tho school by Mr Coombcs, by whoso departure New Zealand was losing a good man. On Mr Anderson's call, the bpys gave three liearty cheers for their departing master. Referring to; athletics, Mr Anderson spoke eulogisticaliy of the fine moral and physical qualities imparted by Rugby football and expressed the hope that before lorrg the annual match between (Boys' High School and Christ's' College would be transformed into' a triangular competition, with St. Andrew's ns the third school. The first .annual display in connexion with St. Andrew's College took place in tho gymnasium last night. Ihcre was a Jarg« audience, composed of parents and friends of the scholars and those interested in the school gener-: ally. A well-balanced and enjoyable j programme was submitted, which siiow-j ed the standard of music, elocution? and I athletic displays to be a high one. Per-| feet physical training was shown in the "parallels" of .gymnastic VIII., find the "'pyramids'' of the boarders were: done with extreme neatness. The cadets contributed rifio exercises,- and also gave a splendid display of physical training. The Junior Cadets gave an exhibition of signalling. Altogether, the prozrammp showed that St. Andrew s College aims at encouraging ,n - 1 scholars not only an appreciation ot t.ie arts, but also a realisation of the value of physical training. A pianoforte solo by Mr Davis Hunt, and quartets by cho Christ-church Lyrb Four, added variety to thy display.
