FIRE BLIGHT.
4 (PBES9 ASSOCUTIOM TELEGBAM.) AUCKLAND, December 15. Mr Partridge, president of the Auckland Central Fire Blight Committee, made a etrong appeal to a meeting oi the executive of the Farmers' Union for co-operation to eecure legislation giving^power to deal -with hawthorn, in wlhich the canker of fire blight is found. Mr Cartridge said: "I am really arraid it is i-oo late so far .as Auckland is concerned. Nit is a matter affecting the whole of tho Dominion. Even if wo Auckland people have to go out of business there is time to #ave orchards in the south." Replying to a question, Mr Partridge said that the Agricultural Department thought that if hawthorn hedges were cut to* about four feet it would suffice. Mr Izard, secretaTy of the committee, said that they now lhad about two hundred people acting as inspectors. The meeting passea the following resolution: "That tihe Government be urgently asked to pass the legislation necessary td*combat fire blight at the earliest possible moment."
