"gTin" on the road. The cost of the shingling was estimated at £165. Tho Council pwvxj permission to the syndicate to rafß the °rcad, but intimated that it vwis not m a position to undertake the ehjngiing at tho present time. The formation of Lake terrace road, with a. coating of metal or scoria at necessary points, was approved. , Tlie engineer recommended tha,t the <Ltyae road xeslrve should not be disposed of. After a lengthy discussion the Council decided to defer the sale of the property. It was decided that the _ Council offioos should be open to the public from 9 a®. to 4.30 p.m., instead of 5 p.m., as formerly. Tlio Burwood Burgesses' Association roouerted a contribution towards tho Bur wood Soldiers' Memorial. The'monthly report stated that had been made with the shingling Ashley Gorge road. Mx Gibson waited on the Council and asked if the Cotrnoil would assist him in putting in a holster above the Burnt Hill ford. It was decided to write to the Domain Board, and if that body is willing to pay its ehaie, tno Council will carry out the work. „. , . It was decided by the Council to buy birds heads and egga at 6d per dozen for large birds' heads and eggs, and 3d per dozen for small birds' heads and Thursday jnomings were fixed for buying eggs and heads. It was decided to patch Woodstock road between Depot road and Burnt Hill road. The rain report for tho month at various efcaiions was: —Croy Bros.', 3.66 in; Tj J« Frame, 7.23 in; and H. H. Prichard, G.62in. It was decided to suppwf tho Progress lieaguo circular urging tho Government to establish a Dominion School of in Canterbury, and to procecd with the Hiley scheme without delay. Tho Council ateo decided to eend a telegram to the Prime Minister in support of the deputation, which will wait on him regarding the Hilcy scheme on October Hth. "
KAIKOUBA. Tho monthly meeting of the Kaakoura County Council was aeld at, the Council Chambers 011 Friday. -Present—Councillors S. Andrew (chairman), E. Parsons, A. Evans, J. Boyd, P. Curran, E. H. Workman, G. D. Smith, T. Harle', and C. Pannell. The Defenco Department notified that war trophies *.ve now available for distribution. The Council decided to apply for eomo heavy calibre tropliiea. The Canterbury Hospital Board notified that one case of diphtheria. was reported jn Kuikoura. for the month of August.
Tho Marlborough Patriotic Association wrote statin® that tho first meeting of the Provincial War Memorial Associaitaon was held last week, and that the Kaikoura and Sounds districts were the only two bodies not definitely associated with the movement. _ K woo desired that the Kaikoura Association should link up with the War Memorial Association. The Council decided to reply that, it had already made provision for a memorial for the district. The Minister for Mine®, replying to the Council's request for a geological surveyor to visit Kaikoura, stated that owing to pressure of work a surveyor could not at present be spared, but that later the position would bo favourably considered. Tho reply was considered unsatisfactory, and tho Department is ito be informed that the Courxaf has been put off in the same way for years. Mr G. J. Pow, Femiehurst, wrote informingl the Council that the road into Conway Rill had been washed away, an'd no trap or dray could get into hia place. He requested that the Council put the road in order. The engineer was requested to attend to the matter eo far as the Council's liability was concerned.
The Under-Secretary of Mines informed the Council that a committee of several technical officers of the various Government Departments was deliberating for the purpose _of considering tho advisability of establishing lime crushing plants, etc., throughout the Dominion, and aeked for information concerning replies in Kaikoura. 1 Mr J. Davidson, agent for the Cygnet, wrote pointing out that the straps on the piles at tho Cygnet's berthing' are too narrow, and that tire sharp edges wcro liable to ea2isc damage to the Steamer. It was decided, providing the steamer is properly tied oft, to have tine plates removed. Mr Forbes, M.P., telegraphed that he had approached the Minister of Public Worlrs about the Department undertaking tho proposed harbour works, and that he had promised to let Mm know if '.lie Department could undertake 'the. work.

The Hospital Board would have the faatter placed before it at. its neat laeetrng 1 . In accord mi oo with notice of motion, Or. Boyd moved:—"Tirat the resolution of the Council be rescinded, and Mi at iho Wharf shed be re-erected in concrete, and that the reclamation work be held in abeyance." - The motion, as concerning the_ shed, was lost. A motion that the engineer prepare estimates for tie reclamation work, and, if possible, ha*o the work carried, out under his mrpeorirfsion, waa carried by three votes to
