WAR MEMORIAL.
R.S.A. SUPPORTS COLUMN,
The campaign for subscriptions for the erection of the war memorials in Christchurch was referred to at the quarterly meeting of the Returned Soldiers' Association last night by the president, the Rev. W. Walker, Who said that it was a matter for. gratification, that the public had at tost a definite scheme before it. While the proposed memorial did net altogether agree with the wishes of the Returned Soldiers' Association, now What it had been decided upon by the public, the Association should give it us support. Ho moved that the meeting should endorse the efforts to raise subscrintions for the memorials, and give all the support it could. Mr \Y. Sprntfc moved as an amendment that the Association, while regretting that t'he public could not see its way to support a Hall of Memories, should adhere to its previous resolution to support a memorial which would be non-utilitarian, and should have the n.vmes of the fallen engraved upon it, and that it should therefore confine its support to the column as proposed by Mr George Gould. Various speakers expressed dissatisfaction at t'he position which had arisen. Mr Walker said that the Association had lost what it wanted, and ho believed in for the next best thing.'' The Association had had representatives on the Memorial Committee, and they had eventually voted for* the double memorial scheme. What he was now asking for was an endorsement of the delegates' action. Eventually the amendment was carried.
